Ethics in the Room: Compliance, Connection, and Clinician Well-Being

Program Summary

This three-hour webinar examines ethics not merely as a regulatory obligation but as a living foundation for effective, transformative clinical outcomes. Participants will explore common ethical violations, including billing fraud, scope of practice concerns, confidentiality and HIPAA compliance, boundary management, and clinician impairment, as well as practical preventative strategies. The training then shifts to the therapeutic relationship as a primary mechanism of client change, drawing on research supporting the working alliance as a consistent predictor of clinical success and examining how transference and countertransference dynamics carry direct ethical implications. We will also address the person of the therapist, inviting clinicians to reflect on their motives for helping, the personal risks of the work, and the self-care practices that sustain ethical, competent practice over time.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least three categories of common ethical violations in mental health practice and describe concrete prevention strategies for each.
  2. Explain the research base supporting the therapeutic alliance as a predictor of client outcomes, and articulate how transference and countertransference dynamics carry ethical implications for the clinician-client relationship.
  3. Assess personal factors that influence clinician competence, including burnout risk and protective self-care behaviors, and develop at least one individualized strategy for sustaining the serving self.
